چکیده

Effective elastic properties of a defected solid with distributed cohesive micro-cracks are estimated based on homogenization of the Dugdale–Bilby–Cottrell–Swinden (Dugdale–BCS) type micro-cracks in a two dimensional elastic representative volume element (RVE). Since the cohesive micro-crack model mimics various realistic bond forces at micro-scale, a statistical average of cohesive defects can effectively represent the overall properties of the material due to bond breaking or crack surface separation in small scale. The newly proposed model is distinctive in the fact that the resulting effective moduli are found to be pressure sensitive.  2004 Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

Effective moduli for thermopiezoelectric materials with microcracks

Dilute, Self-Consistent (SC), Mori–Tanaka (MT) and differential micromechanics methods are developed for microcrack-weakened thermopiezoelectric solids. These methods are capable of determination of effective properties such as the conductivity, electroelastic moduli, thermal expansion and pyroelectric coefficients. The above material constants affected by the microcracks are derived by way of ...

Using Gsc Theory for Effective Thermal Expansion and Pyroelectric Coefficients of Cracked Piezoelectric Solids

Many brittle materials, such as concrete, piezoelectricity, have a large number of preexisting microcracks, The determination of their effective material properties has been the focus of considerable research. Current research into the development of effective material properties has mostly concentrated on the Taylor's method[l], the self-consistent method[2], the differential theory[3], the Mo...

Scattering of elastic waves in damaged media.

The scattering of elastic waves in a medium with damage from microcracking is discussed. The influence of damage from penny-shaped microcracks within a homogeneous medium is considered. The microcracks are assumed to be randomly oriented and uniformly distributed. Explicit expressions are derived for the attenuation of longitudinal and shear elastic waves in terms of the damage parameter and th...

Optimal and manufacturable two-dimensional, Kagomé-like cellular solids

We used the topology optimization technique to obtain two-dimensional, isotropic cellular solids with optimal effective elastic moduli and effective conductivity. The overall aim was to obtain the best (simplest) manufacturable structures for these effective properties, i.e., single-length-scale structures. Three different but simple periodic structures arose due to the imposed geometric mirror...

A penny-shaped cohesive crack model for material damage

A novel micromechanics based damage model is proposed to address failure mechanism of defected solids with randomly distributed penny-shaped cohesive micro-cracks (Barenblatt–Dugdale type). Energy release contribution to the material damage process is estimated in a representative volume element (RVE) under macro hydrostatic stress state. Macro-constitutive relations of RVE are derived via self...
